Overview Of the NR Course

Night Rating – EASA NR(A) allows you to fly during night time in Visual Meteorological Conditions (VMC) and extends the privileges of PPL(A) to flying after sunset under VFR.

This rating opens up new opportunities for pilots, enabling you to conduct flights during nighttime hours and experience aviation from a completely different perspective.

Comprehensive ground and flight training to prepare you for night operations

Ground Training

NR Ground Training

The theoretical preparation consists of 5 hours with an instructor covering all essential aspects of night flight operations.

Topics covered include:

  • Procedures during night flying.
  • Requirements which must be met for night flying.
  • Night Navigation & Cross-country
  • Aircraft control and navigation accuracy for night VFR
  • Regulatory requirements for night operations
  • Weather considerations for night flying

Course Structure

The ground training is designed to prepare you thoroughly for the unique challenges and opportunities of night flight.

Duration

5 hours of theoretical instruction with a qualified flight instructor

Format

Available in both classroom and online formats to suit your schedule

Completion

No written examination required - training is assessed continuously throughout the course

Flight Training

NR Flight Training

The flight training is performed on a single engine piston (SEP) aircraft according to visual flight rules (VFR) at night. The training consists of at least 5 hours.

Training Requirements

  • Minimum 5 hours total flight time at night
  • 4 hours of dual instruction with instructor
  • 1 hour of solo night flight
  • Minimum 5 solo takeoffs and 5 solo landings

Flight Hours Breakdown

Dual Instruction

4 hours of dual flights - Local night flights with instructor reviewing basic manoeuvres, emergencies, take-off, and landing procedures under night conditions.

Solo Flight

1 hour of solo flight - Local solo night flight under supervision of the flight instructor on the ground including 5 take-offs and 5 landings to demonstrate proficiency.

Night Operations

All flight training takes place after sunset and focuses on developing the skills necessary to safely conduct flight operations during darkness, including proper use of aircraft lighting, navigation by visual references at night, and emergency procedures specific to night conditions.

Requirements

Prerequisites to enroll in the EASA Night Rating program

PPL Holder

The Pilot Must be PPL Holder

Medical Class 2

To be at least Class 2 Medical with audio extension holder

Qualifications

Must be Proficient in English, Math, and Physics
